Settling an estate is hard enough without having to figure out what everything is worth. Eau Claire estate auctions give families a straightforward way to sell valuable items and make sure they reach the right buyers.
Wilson Creek Auctions is a Chippewa Valley auction house based in Cornell, just northeast of Eau Claire. We help families sell the coins, jewelry, precious metals and collectibles that often turn up in an estate. For a broader look at buying and selling locally, see our guide to Eau Claire auctions.
Is an estate auction the right fit?
We focus on smaller, valuable items where expertise matters. That includes:
- Coin collections, from a coffee can of old change to graded rarities
- Gold, silver and platinum bullion
- Jewelry boxes, rings, watches and vintage sterling
- Paper currency
- Collectibles with a dedicated buyer base
If the estate is mostly furniture, tools or household goods, a general estate sale company may be a better match. Many families use both: an estate sale for the household and an auction for the valuables.
Don't clean, sort or sell anything yet
The most common mistake we see is cleaning old coins or jewelry before selling. Cleaning can scratch surfaces and cut a coin's value sharply. Leave items as they are.
It's also smart to hold off on quick offers from buyers who come to the house. Until someone knowledgeable has looked at the collection, you can't know what you're turning down.
How the estate auction process works
- Call us. Tell us what's in the estate. We'll talk through options with no pressure.
- We review the items. We look over the collection and give you a sense of what to expect.
- We catalog everything. Each lot is photographed and carefully described.
- The auction runs online. Your items reach collectors across the country, not just local bidders. See how buyers bid in our guide to Eau Claire online auctions.
- You get paid. Payment follows our seller's contract, and you get a record of what each lot sold for.
Gold and coins over $500 sell with 0% seller commission, which can make a real difference on a large collection.
Jewelry in an estate
Jewelry is often the most personal part of an estate and the hardest to value. Some pieces are worth their gold weight. Others bring much more because of the maker, design or stones. Our guide to Eau Claire jewelry auctions explains how jewelry sells at auction.
Working with family members
When several heirs are involved, an auction can keep things fair. Prices are set by open bidding, and everyone can see the results. Some families keep a few sentimental pieces and auction the rest.
